Private Tutoring by Steve

Grade School Math Tutor in Burleson, TX (K-5).

Steve provides one-on-one grade school math tutoring for kindergarten through 5th grade students in Burleson, TX and surrounding areas. He covers the foundations: counting including counting money, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, word problems, and more at the student's pace.

Grade school is when math habits form. Kids who close a small gap in third grade do not turn into kids fighting algebra in eighth grade. Steve's K-5 sessions are patient, encouraging, and built around the student.

What grade school math topics does Steve cover?

K-2: counting, place value, simple addition and subtraction, telling time, money, and early word problems.

3-5: multiplication and division facts, long division, fractions, decimals, area and perimeter, multi-step word problems, and the jump into pre-algebra concepts.

Signs your child is falling behind

  • Avoiding math homework or saying "I'm bad at math."
  • Counting on fingers well past the grade where peers have moved on.
  • Trouble with word problems even when the math itself is fine.
  • Grades dropping or notes from the teacher about basic skills.
  • Tears or frustration over assignments that should be routine.

How sessions work for younger students

Sessions for K-5 students stay short and active: 30 to 60 minutes for the youngest, and 60 minutes for older elementary. Steve mixes manipulatives, paper, and simple practice problems. Reading often shows up too; many K-5 math struggles are actually word-problem reading struggles, which is why reading tutoring is sometimes the right companion.

When students are ready to move up, the next step is pre-algebra.

Common grade school math tutoring questions

What age should a child start tutoring?
There is no minimum age. Steve works with students as young as kindergarten. For early elementary, sessions are short and game-based. The earlier a math gap is closed, the easier the next year is.
My child has a learning difference. Can Steve help?
Yes. One-on-one tutoring is well-suited for kids who need extra time, repetition, or a different way of explaining things. Steve adjusts pace and approach to the student. He is not a credentialed special education specialist, so for formal diagnoses he works alongside the school or a professional. Steve has experience tutoring students with dyslexia, executive functioning challenges, auditory processing disorders, ADHD, and other learning challenges.
How long do sessions run for younger kids?
For K-2 students, 30 to 45 minutes can be the right length, but even very young students can often learn for a full hour when educational games and a couple of breaks are employed during the hour. Older elementary students typically do 60 minutes. The goal is to keep the session productive without burning out a young learner.
